Dressing Well For Less: Elegant Clothing On A Budget

By Serena Price

Knowing how to dress is a skill that will always serve you well, whether in a business setting or in a social setting. However, even when you know how to dress yourself and have the desire to dress well, it can be difficult if you are short of money. Elegant clothing can definitely be expensive, but there are ways you can save money and still dress the way you want to. Here are some tips.

1. Get to know those discount stores! If you are partial to a particular label, visit an outlet store where that label may sell some of its items for a lower price. Also, check out the large discount stores that carry many different labels. It may take awhile to search through the racks and stacks to find an item you love, but when you find it, the time will be worthwhile.

2. Second hand clothing. Like discount shopping, second-hand shopping requires times and energy if it is to be done wisely. Make a day of it, and visit several thrift stores in your area, either alone or with a friend. Look carefully through the selections, and make sure not to waste money on things you only kind of like. Buy what you love, and nothing else.

3. Pair your clothing in new ways. You can make a brand new outfit out of an old pair of jeans by wearing them with some funky boots. An dress from two years ago can look brand new with a denim jacket. Switch things up, and you will find new life in your wardrobe without having to spend any money at all.

4. Buy clothing you can wear often. Choose neutral colors, or colors that go with things you already have. This way, you can practice mixing and matching. Any clothing item is more valuable if it can be worn with different things to create different outfits. Generally, the more money you spend on something, the more versatile it should be.

5. Buy a nice coat. In the winter (and even in late fall and early spring), people see you in your coat more often than they see what you're wearing underneath. This is why it's important to have a coat that is stylish as well as functional. That way you can make a good impression any time you're walking around outside, even if you're wearing pajamas underneath!

6. Invest in nice shoes. The nicest of outfits can be ruined if worn with frumpy or torn up shoes. Likewise, an outfit can go from just okay to very stylish when paired with the right shoes. Invest in shoes that are both cute and comfortable, so that you can wear them often and always look put together.

You do not have to choose between looking good and saving money. Even though elegant clothing sometimes cost a lot, there are plenty of ways to be a savvy shopper and buy them for less. It takes effort and creativity, but it is definitely worthwhile. You will look and feel good, and that feeling will be increased by the knowledge that you still have some money in the bank.
