Various Fashion Turban Style Choices

By Cathy Mercer

Hats and other head coverings have been used throughout the course of time for many different reasons. Some are worn for religious purposes, others for status, tradition, protection, practicality and of course, style. Women in many different cultures have began to see the beauty in fashion turban choices when looking for a headdress that is attractive and functional.

Most women choose their head covering to either serve a specific purpose or to accentuate a particular outfit. Since they can be made from a wide variety of fabrics and in many different designs, turbans are often a top choice. A big part of their appeal lies in their flexibility in look and practicality.

Scarves can be used in a number of ways to form a very fashionable wrapped head covering. To get started, one will need a large scarf that is either squared, rectangular or triangular. Lightweight fabrics that are soft to the touch such as silk, cotton, nylon and linen are generally the most comfortable and are quite easy to handle.

Through the use of specific folds, twists and knots, there are literally hundreds of different stylish ways to wrap one's head. One of the simplest forms of turban is to make the scarf into a triangle and begin by placing the center of the flat side just above one's eyebrows with the point going over towards the back. Twist the two extended ends into ropes and tie them in the rear with the loose tip tucked under the knot in a classic bandanna style.

When folded into a long rectangle of approximately three inches wide, there are several options to be had. A more updated version of the traditional style turban can be achieved through a few well placed wraps, knots, twists, tucks and stretches. A couple of windings in opposite directions can provide a rather unique type of headband.

All the intricate finger work that is required to make the traditional styles of turbans may not be easy for some people to do. Those who prefer, have the option of buying caps that are sewn to look like the complicated folding styles formally used. These ready made caps are designed to stretch easily over the wearer's head and fit as snugly as if professionally wound.

The caps come in many different styles as well to fit pretty much any need or desire one may have for this type of covering. They can be made to look exactly like a tightly wrapped scarf, only they will be stretchy so that they can be fitted over one's head quickly and easily. Designs vary greatly, making it possible to find one to please even the pickiest fashionista.

Regardless of whether one prefers to do the wrapping themselves or to purchase a designer made cap, there are many fashion turban options to consider. Finding a fabric and pattern that suits one's personal preference is a good place to begin when deciding what style to wear. The headdresses may be further personalized through the addition of embellishments like rosettes, bows, jewels and ribbons.
