Microdermabrasion Crystals And Their Use

By Gwen Lowe

Microdermabrasion crystals are tiny pieces of material that are blasted onto the skin to remove built up layers of dead skin cells. Our skin naturally replaces dead skin cells with new ones, but as we get older this process slows down and the dead skin cells cannot be completely removed. This build up can lead to clogged pores, a dull appearance of the skin, and more noticeable wrinkles.

The procedure is performed at a dermatology office or at a spa with a specialist, called an esthetician. Skin is vacuumed first to trigger lymph node draining and increased blood flow. The suction stimulates the skin to trigger the growth of new skin cells. Once the vacuuming is complete, the spraying is started.

This particular procedure, also known as skin blasting, blows a specific type of crystal onto the skin. The blasting removes the built up dead skin cells from the skin. Once the blasting is complete, the crystal material and skin cells are sucked up with a vacuum machine. Newer machines use a wand that delivers the crystals and vacuums at the same time. After the session is finished, the skin is noticeably different, often appearing more youthful and smooth.

There are a few crystal types that may be used. Two common choices are ones made of aluminum oxide or baking soda. Some procedures may use a type of crystal that is made from salt. You may have the option, depending on where you go to have the procedure done, to choose which type you want used.

Microdermabrasion is an ideal choice for people who have dull, tired looking skin. It is a non-invasive procedure. Many people often choose this type over dermabrasion procedures because there is less recovery time. Skin remains pink for about a day following the procedure, and then you can continue using makeup. Unlike dermabrasion, this procedure does not have the potential to cause discoloring or scarring on darker skin colors. There is also no need for anesthetics because you do not experience the same pain as you would with dermabrasion.

Side effects are minimal. The procedure only involves the epidermal layer of the skin, providing a more comprehensive exfoliation. Sensitivity to light is common, so it is always advised to avoid direct sunlight for a couple of days. Some people may also experience tightness and light bruising in some spots. Skin peeling is also common.

More than one session is usually necessary. The average is about six, but you may need more or less depending on the results you desire. Generally, sessions are spaced two weeks apart to allow time for the skin to recover properly.

When you are looking for a way to rejuvenate your skin without relying on harmful injections or invasive treatments, this procedure can provide you with different options. The type of crystal used may vary, but you can contact multiple places to determine which ones are offered. Always check the experience levels of the staff members who perform this procedure.
