How To Find And Wear Affordable Designer Clothing

By Lila Bryant

Everyone who's ever opened a fashion magazine dreams of wearing clothes by top fashion brands. However, these clothes come at a very expensive price which most people can't afford. Luckily it's not that hard to find affordable designer clothing. You simply need to know where to look.

If you want to be able to wear clothes by top designers but don't have the budget for this, the first thing you need to do is realize that you don't need to wear the latest ranges all the time. In fact, slavishly following the latest trends can make you look a little desperate or nouveau riche. If you choose wisely, it's perfectly possible to wear items from last season or even from a couple of seasons ago without anyone thinking that your look is outdated.

An important principle to remember is to choose classic, timeless designs. You can wear these for several seasons without them looking outdated. This means that you can easily pick up expensive labels at huge discounts during the January or end-of-season sales and wear these items next season or the one after that.

Another good way to find great bargains is to look in second-hand stores. There are many online retailers that specialize in pre-owned designer clothes. Even charity shops sometimes have items that are still in great condition and will cost you only a couple of dollars. It does take some dedication to browse through these shops, though.

There's no reason to be ashamed of second-hand clothes. After all, both Reese Witherspoon and Penelope Cruz received their Academy Awards while dressed in stunning vintage gowns from the Fifties, Witherspoon's by Dior and Cruz's by Balmain. One of the most admired Oscar gowns of all time was the one Julia Roberts wore when she won her award. Her dress came from Valentino's collection from nine years before and she had to have it altered so that it would fit her.

A horrible fashion mistake is to buy counterfeit designer clothes. The people who make these items are breaking the law. Moreover, you'll only embarrass yourself when someone with real fashion knowledge spots that your bargain buy is a fake.

If you're brave in your fashion choices, you'll know that you don't need to buy clothes by the most famous designers only. Young, up-and-coming designers often create more imaginative pieces that can set real trends. The added advantage is that these clothes are normally much less expensive too.

It's also possible to look like you're wearing designer clothes even when you're not. Many retail stores sell items that were inspired by a couture design and you'd never know the difference unless you looked at the label. Then add brand-name accessories such as sunglasses, which are often among the more affordable pieces from a fashion house's collection.
