Lakeland FL Chiropractor Actively Educates Community About Spine Health

By Melisa Carlucci

The spine is a complicated structure composed of hollow bones, discs, nerves, muscles and ligaments. The vertebrae protect the delicate spinal cord that lies within them. The vertebrae have little gel-filled discs between them to prevent rubbing. A leading Lakeland FL Chiropractor is disseminating information to the public on protecting the spine.

There are thirty-three vertebrae in the spinal column. They are divided into four sections. From neck to tailbone they are, seven cervical, twelve thoracic, five lumbar and five sacral. The tailbone or coccyx is at the lower end of the spine.

The five sacral are fused. There are no intervertebral discs separating them. Each of the discs is fluid in children and tend to harden as the individual ages. When viewed from the side, the spine forms a slightly curved S shape

The normal curve is minimal. If it is too curved or twisted, that may cause a problem. One of the well-known abnormal curves is scoliosis, which is a side to side curve. Abnormal anatomical structures can cause herniation.

Herniation occurs when a disc ruptures. It then protrudes from its normal position. This familiar condition is well-known and painful. The pain is due to the disc impacting a nerve.

From bone to hollow bone, the vertebrae serve to keep the spinal cord undamaged. Running from the brain stem, it continues down to end at the first lumbar vertebra. The system of nerves start there and innervate the entire body.

Protective measures can keep the cord from being damaged. Some are simple to do. Remember to sit up straight and stand up straight with one foot slightly in front of the other. If you work at a desk, get up and walk every so often. If you have to lift something heavy, ask for help.

The general public will benefit by learning the information offered by the Florida chiropractor. Maintaining spinal health is far easier than restoring it. With care, you can avoid endangering situations. However, if the worst should happen, chiropractor care may provide rehabilitation through the use of manual adjustments.
