If you own a pair of leather shoes, you know that it requires a little care. If you do not keep them moisture free, clean, and supple, you will find mold or cracks can form. Knowing where to find a local cobbler who can help and advise you is helpful. You will find though that using leather shoe care products is essential to having the pair last for years and years.
Something that does not take any time at all is to just rotate the shoes or at least take them off as soon as you get home. By doing so, you are allowing the moisture to dry out, which is important for the leather. In addition, place a cedar shoe tree inside the pair once you removed them from your feet.
There are metal and plastic models but they will not allow your shoes to dry properly. Get a cedar one. How it works is, while drying, the leather draws back to its original shape which is going to extend the life of the insoles and uppers. It also prevents those ugly lines from forming where it flexes. So, as soon as you take them off, place the cedar shoe trees into them and leave until you wear them again.
You might be wondering what the big deal is about moisture. Well, other than making your feet uncomfortable, it allows mold and bacteria to grow on the leather. A few simple ways to prevent this from happening is to always dry them properly when they get wet by inserting a towel or newspaper inside them and removing when damp. Also, apply a light waterproofing spray when you first purchase them, or you can simply use a wax based polish. There are also waterproofing compounds you can purchase and apply.
Allowing the pair to get too dry is also a problem. It will cause them to crack, thus ruining them. Use a specialty conditioner or shoe cream every few months to prevent them from drying out. You can also buff in a little dab of petroleum jelly to do the job.
You can also keep them in good shape by using a shoe horn when putting them on. Applying a little shoe spray will make cleaning easier. A horse hair brush to be used for applying polish and removing any excess is also necessary. In addition do not forget to use cedar shoetrees. These items will help you maintain and extend their life.
You will also need some basic items to keep them clean. Saddle or oil soap, a specialty cleaner, and a dry cloth are a must. You can use your horsehair brush to help get dirt, mud, and alkaline off. For scuff marks, gently rub an eraser or non-gel toothpaste on then brush off.
At some point you are going to need to have the pair resoled or refurbished. You have two choices. Either find a local cobbler you trust and take it to them. You could also pack up the pair in the original box and return to the manufacture to have the work done.
