How Calming Ocean Sounds Alleviate Stress And Sooth The Spirit

By Linda Ruiz

In today's frenetic world, increasing numbers of people are looking for ways to add greater peace and tranquillity to their lives. One of the easiest ways they can do this is by listening to the sounds of nature on CD or mp3. Calming ocean sounds and other natural ambiance have a tremendously relaxing effect on the psyche and are ideal for those who are stressed and overloaded.

One way in which they can be of benefit is as an adjunct to activities like yoga, pilates and meditation. Huge numbers of people are now turning to these practices and are discovering a new-found balance and peace of mind. Many are also recognizing how much more they can get out of these practices when listening to the sounds of mother nature.

The main aim of meditation is to slow down conscious thought and thus reduce mental 'chatter'. This can be very challenging for many people, since stress causes emotional turmoil which in turn makes the mind more agitated. Nature's sounds are relaxing and thus help calm the emotions and the mind, making meditation that much easier and more effective.

Similarly with yoga, stress and mental anguish can get in the way of the focus needed to perform it well. Relaxation helps practitioners perform each pose with greater depth and calmness of mind, thus enriching their experience. They are able to get more out of each session and reap the benefits of this ancient practise that much more quickly and easily.

These effects come as no surprise to scientists who have researched the effects of nature's sounds. Studies have shown that they can help people recover from stress more quickly and easily. Even the non-scientists among us know at an intuitive level that these sounds can have a calming, restorative effect. We all have a primal response to the natural environment, and it's effect on us can be profound.

This can be seen in the often remarkable effects nature's sounds have on children. They seem to connect with babies and toddlers at a very basic level. Upset babies often respond well to calming natural sounds when other attempts to calm them have failed. Likewise, a child that is reluctant to sleep will often drift off easily when given calming nature sounds to sleep to.

Many adults also make use of these sounds as an aid to sleep. They have discovered that having a recording of this kind playing in the background can be quite an effective 'tranquillizer'. Some also use them to create a more restful home environment. Sounds of summertime for example can help dispel the gloom for those living in colder climes and create a more cheerful atmosphere.

Teenage and adult students can benefit from these recordings, too. Those who need to concentrate will find that nature's music is a lot more conducive to study than most pop music! Students who are relaxed and focused during their study time are far more likely to retain what they learn than those who are distracted.
