Elvis Presley, The Goodmans And Hinsons The Lighthouse

By Helen Long

Christian country, rock and hip-hop have become rather popular over the last several decades. Prior to that time, gospel, especially southern gospel had a hold on the faithful. With bands and songs like Hinsons The Lighthouse, groups worked to spread the message of Jesus, hope, faith and love all around the world. The music, while framed in Christianity, has often been enjoyed by people of varying beliefs.

With a line-up of male and female siblings along with a few back up singers and guest artists, the group eventually found success. Originally formed in 1967, the band first played a revival in Freedom, California that same year. After which, the band continued playing bookings up and down the west coast.

Shortly after appearing in California, the group found bookings at churches and auditoriums up and down the west coast. Later, the band moved on to a shorter version by simply identifying as The Hinsons. When looking to find online versions of songs by the band, individuals should search under all configurations including, The Hinsons, The Singing Hinsons and The Original Hinsons.

The Lighthouse became the signature song of the group when one of the brothers came back with the title and lyrics on a piece of toilet paper in 1970. After the group discussed the need for new material, Ronny, one of the brothers seem to disappear for several minutes then returned with the song which had apparently been written during a short bathroom visit. While first recorded by The Goodmans, The Hinsons also recorded the song shortly thereafter.

Then, the most amazing thing happened, Elvis Presley also recorded The Lighthouse. After which, the song quickly became a hit and since been reborn thanks to video sites and other new media formats. As with the days shortly after Elvis recorded the song, it is no doubt new media will bring new life to The Lighthouse and many other gospel groups and songs of the past.

Due to the ministerial style presented in concert format, many considered the band to be quite radical for the time. Often providing more ministry than music, some listeners became bored and moved on to other live performances. Still, even with this challenge related to live shows, the group continued to move forward.

Never say never seems to be the motto of this group. For, even with the lost of interest in live shows, the band went on to release many more albums and recordings. Some of these include the well known songs "Shinin, " and "Look What He's Done For Me, " along with others which many listeners thought had a country and western rather than gospel sound.

Whether definable within a specific genre or otherwise, it is no doubt the group eventually found success. With the popular songs of the past now available on YouTube and other sites, there is no doubt the band will also generate new fans and followers. Now reformed, the band only hopes these new found fans will listen to the mostly spiritual messages often hidden within the lyrics of song.
