Everyone knows what an apron is, as it makes appearances in different places. They are worn by those who work in your favorite restaurant. They are worn by the service crew at your favorite restaurant or local diner. They are worn by the servers at the coffee shop that you frequently visit whenever you need that dose of caffeine to start your day right. They have even made an appearance earlier on, back when your mother used to wear one when she whips out something special from the kitchen.

They are also used for a hygienic and safety reasons, as their primary function is to protect the clothes from dirt and from normal wear and tear. They are also a part of a clothing ensemble, such as a part of most uniforms worn by domestic workers, nurses, household helpers, and waitresses. Waist aprons for women are even worn by mothers when they are out working in the kitchen.

There are several kinds of aprons that fulfill individual functions. For example, those used by carpenters have so much pockets. These are used to hold tools so that he does not have to carry his toolbox around as he does repairs. A welders apron is naturally built out of fireproof material. It also has special properties to shield one from the intense heat and from the sparks that could fly out and injure somebody.

Chemists also use an especially designed one that is meant for use inside a laboratory. Safety clothing is a standard in laboratory work, especially as these people often deal with potentially harmful chemicals and toxic substances. Without the necessary precautions, accidents can happen and these chemicals can spill onto clothes. An apron acts just like a shield so that the spills will not land directly onto your clothes.

One is also used when dealing with x rays. These are known to exude high amounts of radiation that can harm the human body if it is left unprotected. For safety reasons, people who work closely with x rays are required to wear lead aprons.

Chefs and other food technicians also wear one during the course of their duties. They are designed to protect their pristine white uniforms from food items, grease, sauce, and other condiments that may land on the clothes in the midst of the hectic activities inside a very busy kitchen. Those who stay at home also use one as a shield against the dirt and stains one can incur while doing chores.

There are so many designs of aprons, too, such as the pinafore, which was a very common design back then. It was even a part of the usual dress bask then. It is characterized by a full skirt and shoulder straps that seem to double as a sort of sleeves.

The cobbler types are fastened at the sides by ribbons. Most aprons only cover the front part, but this design protects both the front and the back. The bib is the most popular type used today. It is tied around the neck and around the waists.

Waist aprons are seen everywhere. As their name implies, they are tied at the waist by two strings. They are also called half apron because they cover only the lower half of the body. They are favorite for use by waitresses and are a staple at barbecue parties.
