Essentially, they are slender and long pieces of fabrics with a length not exceeding nine metres. There are of two types and are either wrapped or unwrapped. Some of them are just simple scarves that are wrapped on the head. A number of people face difficulties in wearing this turban. The lack of the appropriate skills to tie them leads to the formation of tight turbans which usually give them headaches.

There are two main kinds of the Arab turban. These are the keffiyeh and amamah. The keffiyeh is not a turban as such but it serves the same purpose as that of the amamah. It is a piece of fabric that is tied around the head to offer protection from the extreme heat. The main differences between the two lies in the techniques employed in wearing them and the fabric used to make them.

The turbans serve different purposes and represent unique things depending on the location of the wearer. They are used as a basis for recognizing individuals from the same community. This facilitates the strengthening of social ties between these individuals. Many Muslims wear them when attending prayers. Islamic religious leaders and scholars wear white ones for easy identification.
