The history of the royal blue garment can however not be traced although there are claims that it had been worn in the times of war by Sikh warriors. On the garment there is a metallic image of a crescent sword and a double edged one, these are held together by a woven chainmail cord which is woven in a pattern. It protected the head of the wearer from any sort of slashing weapons and also served as a beautification object.

The garment got global fame when it was spotted exactly behind the Queen's family in the Diamond Jubilee merriments which marked the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It was worn by a young man from a British Sheikh institution. The garment went on to become a global trending topic especially on social media.

The garment is not all about aesthetics though; on the contrary it has its significance to the Sikh religion and culture. The simple act of wearing the garment was word that you had pledged unconditional allegiance to your guru and had also committed yourself to protecting everybody, even those harboring ill will towards the well being of you or that of your family. It is also considered as a sign of nobility and respectability and thus the wearer is treated as such.

Interestingly, the garment is not all culture and religion but also has an aspect of technology in it. Since the hair is long it is usually tied into a knot. This is known as Rishi knots which supposedly draws meditation energy towards the head. Now the aspect of the garment towards that purpose is holding the 26 bones that make up the skull in place.

There are some differences between how the article is worn in Sikhism and other religions. For one in Sikhism it is wound anew on each and every day. It is also wrapped with a peak on the front. Women are allowed to wear the sacred garment it is not a must that they do and thus majority wears a scarf.
