What Are Microdermabrasion Crystals And How Are They Used

By Dawn Williams

Throughout the lifetime of a person, skin has the ability to rejuvenate on its own. Skin cells die and are replaced with new cells. As people age, this process begins to slow down. Dead skin cells build up on the surface of the skin instead of shedding off. This build up causes wrinkles to be more visible, the skin to appear dull, and the pores to get blocked. For these issues, microdermabrasion crystals can be used to help get rid of the skin cell build up.

The skin treatment is usually performed in a salon or cosmetic treatment facility. A technician uses a type of vacuum machine to remove anything sitting on the skin. This suction also helps to stimulate blood flow to the area and encourage draining of the lymph nodes. Through the increase in circulation, skin cells are able to multiply much faster because the blood flow has increased.

After the suctioning, a crystal material is blasted at the surface of the skin. Some facilities will use a different machine for this step, while others have machines that handle all steps in the procedure. The blasting of the special material removes any cells that were still present after suctioning. Baking soda and aluminum oxide are common substances that are used to make the crystal material.

The third step in the process is to suction the skin again. This second suctioning will get rid of all the remaining dead cells that were broken up by the crystal blasting, along with anything else that got removed from the surface. Oxygen exposure is increased because the pores are now open. Smooth and young looking skin is the end result.

One of the main reasons people choose this type of cosmetic procedure is because it does not involve surgery. The risks are much lower than with surgery or other procedures. Also, the recovery time is much shorter, if there is any recovery at all. Surgery is one other option for removing skin surface issues that are deeper in the skin layers, but it may not always be necessary.

There are many different problems that can be fixed with the crystal method. One common issue for many people is the appearance of wrinkles. Light scarring from acne breakouts have also shown improvement after treatment. Deep scarring, however, or damage that is more extensive often does not show any improvement because they occur in multiple layers of the skin.

As with many other types of procedures, there are some disadvantages, generally limited to the side effects that can be experienced. The surface of the skin may be irritated and red for a few days following a session. Some people have also had flaking or peeling.

Many issues that occur on the surface of the skin are not usually rectified with one session. It is often necessary to undergo at least three or four sessions with the microdermabrasion crystals. To avoid permanent damage to the skin or developing an infection, sessions should be spaced out with at least a few weeks between them.
