Changing colors in hair can be a daunting thing for most individuals. The idea of growing old is already stressful enough, but when it is seen through the changing color of hair, it can damage self-esteem. Most people turn to coloring gray hair to hide the signs of aging. Instead of doing what most people find popular, try these methods to dyeing your locks to the color you want.

Most people would prefer to use a stylist to hide the changing hue of their locks. The reason is those stylists are trained to make people look their best. They know how to apply dye and make it last and shine. However, finding a stylist is not for everyone. Some people opt for an at-home dye to cover their showing gray.

Following the instructions with at-home dye is important for several reasons. The dye can cause bald spots if used improperly on the head. Additionally, it can also leave skin irritations on the scalp, face and behind the ears. The benefit of the at-home dye is that it is easy to use, works faster and cheaper than visiting a stylist.

Most at-home dyes require you to mix the color agent with ammonia and hydrogen peroxide agent. These agents work together to keep the color fused to the strands. Mix the two thoroughly by shaking it up. Remember to wear gloves during this procedure and during application. Have a wet face towel nearby if you get dye on your skin.

The easiest way to begin to color locks is to part it first. Using barrettes or clips, part it into four sections atop of the head. Begin with the base of one section and apply the color until it saturates that section to the ends. Keep as much dye off the scalp as possible. If a little gets on there that is OK since it will rinse off later. Cover each section thoroughly.

People with extraordinary long locks often use more than one box of dye. Shoulder length locks typically only use one box, but it may be an idea to keep an extra box handy in case an area is missed. Spiky or short hair usually just requires touch-up kits. After saturating the dye in all areas of the hair, a waiting period of 45 minutes is required to set. People that use natural dye have to let it set in their locks for at least a couple of hours or longer.

Once the waiting period is over, rinse the dye thoroughly with warm water. Rinse in the sink or in a shower, however you rid of the dye, be sure to rinse until the water runs clear. Next, you will be applying conditioner that helps to keep the dye from washing out. Most people find that darker colors color grey much better than lighter colors.

Do not go longer than the waiting period for coloring gray hair. If you do, there is a good chance you will go bald. The chemicals in at-home dyes are strong, so following directions is necessary to get great results. Do not use your normal shampoo for a few days, as this will wash out the color. Keep your head clean and comb it regularly until you can shampoo it again.
