By Karen Miseneer

The most common skin condition worldwide, is acne. It predominantly affects teenagers but can also be seen in the older population as well. Caused by Propionibacterium acne and precipitated by certain risk factors, this condition is notorious for flaring up recurrently. There are many methods that will help to reduce acne, and we will look at some of the more simple methods, and other options that can be chosen.

What factors contribute to acne in adults?

Sebaceous glands are contained within the skin that secrete sebum, which is a thick and oily material. When sebum traps bacteria in the pores due to blockages; this can be a cause of acne. Inflammation is the result, and acne forms in the skin because of the excess bacteria. For women, more acne can occur during menopause or pregnancy, and in men, it can occur as testosterone is produced.

Treating adult acne

There are a number of different methods that are now available to treat adult acne. The problem is that not every way is as effective as others, and will not work the same on all people. Certain simple measures can be taken that can help reduce breakouts and eventually lead to the acne disappearing.

1. There are plenty of over-the-counter cleansing solutions that can be purchase in many drug or grocery stores. Sebum secretions are cleaned out, opening the pores.

2. Topical creams are another option, with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide. Redness can be lessened, and the spread and amount of acne can be brought down effectively. There are some issues with this treatment for certain people, as flaking and itching can be a problem if the skin becomes too dry.

3. Antibiotics - These are usually prescribed by a general practitioner or a dermatologist. Lots of people have gotten successful results from a topical antibiotic cream such as clindamycin. Oral medication such as tetracycline can also help but long courses of this treatment are usually required. Teeth can be stained by the use of tetracyclines though, patients need to be aware of this.

Home remedies that are easy

The basic act of washing the skin with warm water and soap is an age old method to reduce acne. Hot water is not recommended as it can dry the skin out to much. Avoid rubbing the skin with a towel when drying the face after washing it as this can cause trauma to it and can precipitate acne. There are different reasons that people get acne, and it's a good idea to find what triggers it for every individual.

Treatments for more serious acne

There have been recent advances in dermatology, and techniques for adult acne treatments have been improved dramatically. There are lots of treatment processes, including blue light therapy, laser therapy, or chemical peels. There are the simpler methods that a doctor or dermatologist will apply before recommending that anyone has any of these more intensive treatment for acne.
