Taking Care of our Skin

By Cristine Sphan

Throughout your life, genetic and environmental factors will cause a lot of wear and tear to your skin. But it's never too late to start taking care of your skin. In fact, skin care and protection should be an essential part of your health, fitness, and beauty regime.

Preventing damage is the first step to taking care of your skin. The condition of your skin is degraded by sun, wind, pollutants, and simply aging. Common complaints include dry and itchy skin, wrinkles, sagging, and age spots. To keep your skin looking and feeling its best, here are some steps that you can take:

Exercise, rest, and good nutrition lay the foundation for beautiful, healthy skin, inside and out. Ensure your skin will receive all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that it needs to maintain and repair cells by getting a proper diet. And don't forget to drink lots of water. Your body needs water to hydrate the skin and move waste and nutrients through the system.

The most important way to care for your skin is to protect it from the damaging rays of the sun. Skin damage is caused by ultraviolet radiation, which can lead to wrinkles, age spots, premature aging, and cancer. Use sunscreen to make sure your skin is not exposed to the sun's rays. But don't use too much. A bit of sunshine every day is good for your skin.

As we age, dry skin is even more common. Younger skin has more sweat and oil glands than older skin. Dry skin can be a result of certain cosmetics, frequent baths, or some medications. If possible, cut back on the number of baths or showers each week, and avoid using harsh soaps when bathing. Try using a natural, mild soap that is perfume- and dye-free, when you must lather up. Follow up the bath with a moisturizer. Keep skin healthy by continuing to moisturize throughout the day. Your hands and face may need to be moisturized several times; they are particularly susceptible to daily damage.

Develop a Routine for your Skin

You should develop some kind of skin care routine based on your skin type, daily activities, and nutritional needs so that you can be sure you are taking the very best care of your skin. You can also more closely evaluate your skin for abnormalities when you follow a daily skin care regime.

A routine for washing is necessary. On a daily basis, wash your skin thoroughly to remove the pollutants, dirt, debris, and perspiration that accumulates every day. If you have dry or sensitive skin, use only warm water to wash your skin and use a mild natural cleanser every few days. If you have normal or oily skin, be sure to wash with a gentle cleanser on a daily basis.

Your washing routine should include moisturizing. Unless you have very oily skin, a daily moisturizer is important to keep your skin hydrated. Both indoor winter heat and summer sun can be equally damaging to your skin, so it needs moisturizer all year long.

Make sure protection is a part of your daily skin program. Again, use a natural sunscreen when possible, regardless of whether or not you plan on spending much time in the sun. If you get in the habit of applying sunscreen everyday, you will never be left without protection from the sun's damaging rays.
