The Art Of Turban Tying

By Claudine MacDonald

Having some pointers on turban tying can be useful for both the new and experienced alike. Sikhs typically wear them as they are tied in with their religion. It used to be that only males of high status would wear them, however, it is now a requirement in India that all adult males wear them. It is a symbol of their spirituality.

It is fairly easy to create a turban of your own. You will need a long piece of fabric, no shorter than three feet long and about one foot wide. It can be any color, although different colors symbolize different meanings depending on the culture and religion. These are important factors to keep in mind when selecting a color for your turban.

Rolling the fabric up before you start can make the process simpler. As there is a fair amount of material, unrolling it as you go can make it less frustrating at first. Once you are ready to begin, hold one end of the fabric in place while you unroll with the other. Wrap diagonally as you go. This is critical in order to ensure a proper and secure turban.

Before you begin though, leave about a half an inch or so in the back, this is vital to properly finishing wrapping at the end. As you wrap, keep flattening out the material and adjusting to keep it snug against your head. By flattening it out and adjusting as you go, you will keep any clumps of fabric from forming.

Once almost all of the material has been used and the majority of your head has been wrapped, you will have about a foot or so of material left. Fold this in half, then take that last bit and tuck it into the top side, leave some space in the center unwrapped. This is important for the next step.

Remember that piece of fabric at the beginning that was left around your neck? Pull that up and use it to cover that empty space at the center back of the head. If you did any folding of the fabric, at this time you will want to unfold just that piece so it cover the uncovered area. Tuck it underneath the fabric to hold it firmly in place.

Typically, turbans are sold as a sheet of cloth which is sixteen feet in length and three feet in width. Folding the cloth in half several times until the width is no greater than four to five inches is imperative. It is vital to keep this in mind when creating your own. Try to get as close to these parameters as possible for the best possible result. A longer length of fabric is more important than a wider width though.

Once it has been done several times, turban tying can be quite easy and even fun. It is important to keep in mind that length and width are important when creating your own from scratch. However always remember, the main key is to keep wrapping diagonally and be sure to leave that extra bit of fabric at the back of your neck to give it that final touch.
