How Post Civil War Gowns Differ From The Previous Fashion Sense

By Celia Hall

Women have always loved fashion, right from the early times. This is why most of them would rather go hungry rather than miss the latest fashion. The fashion industry is therefore very dynamic and competent when compared to others in the global market. With each passing season, something new comes up. Right from the high end designers to the local tailors, they all use their creativity and imagination to create unique designs. Sometimes, the current designs are just a recreation of past frocks and gowns. How then do the post civil war gowns differ from the past?

During the pre-war periods, garments like day dresses were necessary for every woman. Apart from the wives of nobles and kings, the average common woman had a couple of such dresses and at least one or two to wear on special occasions such as church services, visiting relatives and such like things. These special dresses could only be worn during those specific days. They also owned petticoats and other undergarments. Privacy slips and covers could be spotted in their wardrobes.

The wives and daughters of the rich merchants among others in high society had splendid ball gowns worn on formal occasions. The choice of material was mostly taffeta or silk. It was fashionable to wear certain items, which included corsets or even wide hoop petticoats worn mostly in the south.

Weather determined the fashion of the day. Women used their parasols or bonnets as a measure against some specific weather conditions. These included both sunny and rainy days. Jewelry was also valued highly, but most of them used flowers and lockets as accessories.

Hair fashions on the other hand also differed greatly with the modern woman style. Ladies in this period used hair pomades and other oils to keep their hair in place. Snoods and bun covers were also common accessories for the head. They often patted their hair in the middle going downwards. One could also pin it in a fashionable way especially during certain occasions.

Shoes were also found in different unique designs. Most women during this era did not have the luxury of owning many different shoe types. They used a pair for different occasions. This is quite different from the modern woman of this century.

The lace up boots was the most common shoe types in this period. They were considered fashionable and comfortable. They could also be worn together with many different dresses among other clothing types. Their use however declined especially during the war period, since people could not afford them because of the post war effects.

In conclusion, most women during this era were graceful and fashionable. They had a great fashion sense, patiently tying up hoops and wearing tight corsets among other things. The post civil war gowns on the other hand differ in detail, and the modern woman would be caught dead than dress up in clothes similar to the previous era.
