The Link Between Stress And Acne

By Jon Chamberlain

It's well-known that there is a link between your physical body and mental state. There are numerous stories about people having physical ailments due to psychology problems.

Scientific studies have likewise found an association between an individual's mind and their acne. The more emotional stress they are under, the better the chance they will get acne. Clearly this is totally dependent on the individual but it is common to find that people that are more at risk to acne will be more prone to it under duress.

Speaking from experience, the most severe amount of pimples I got was during when I was the most stressed out. Surprisingly, getting pimples forced me to be more distressed and after which, this added distress made the acne even worse. This "vicious circle" may then be hard to break free from.

Medical professionals can't fully explain just how stress and anxiety causes acne. But what they believe is that stress and anxiety no longer inhibits the cells that make sebum. In other words, there is absolutely nothing to stop sebum production when you find yourself under stress. This can then lead to your skin pores blocking up. Acne bacteria then moves in and feeds off of the sebum. When harmful bacteria multiplies and irritates your body, a defensive response is initiated which then causes the inflammation and cystic acne.

In this situation, it is a good idea to ease stress somehow. Below are a few things you could try.

Meditating - this is a great way to relax your body and mind

Exercise - this produces endorphins which makes you happy

Sex - enough said!

Social gatherings - venturing out and interacting with friends is often a fun way to de-stress

Activities - do something you like such as playing games, reading, listening to music

Laughter - watch a funny tv show or go to a comedy club

The worst thing for stress and anxiety is being alone with your own thoughts. Being together with family and friends usually leaves you in a better mood. Just in case you can't be around people, do something, ANYTHING, to keep your mind and body busy.

Following these tips on stress relief may help in your cystic acne breakouts. The state of your mind is a powerful thing that has full control of your body so if you do suffer from breakouts regardless of whether it is caused by stress, ensure any bad thoughts about your acne is treated as part of any cystic acne treatment.
